Another bout of gunfire rocked a Surrey neighbourhood Sunday evening.
Newton resident Doug Elford tweeted about hearing gunfire outside his home near 134th Street and 70B Avenue at around 8 p.m.
According to witnesses, two black vehicles were shooting at each other before fleeing the scene.
Elford said he doesn鈥檛 think there was anyone injured but 鈥渃ops are crawling all over the place, picking up shells right now.鈥
Surrey Mounties confirmed it received a report of shots fired in the 13400-block of 70B Avenue. Officers found evidence 鈥渃onsistent with shots being fired,鈥 said Sgt. David MacDonald in a statement. No injuries were reported.
A strong police presence was visible in the neighbourhood, with several cruisers on scene, and officers scouring the road for clues.
The shooting occurred when many people were out and about enjoying the warm spring evening with children playing on the street.
鈥淭his is really close to home,鈥 said Elford, who is also a member of the Newton Community Association.
鈥淲e鈥檙e frustrated that RCMP doesn鈥檛 have control of this. This place is crawling with police but they don鈥檛 seem to have a grip on this. It鈥檚 just lucky how people are not getting killed in the crossfire.鈥
Mounties say they are still trying to determine whether Sunday鈥檚 shooting is linked to the more than two dozen shootings that have plagued Surrey and Delta since early March.
Recent cases of gun violence in Surrey include one on May 7, when witnesses reported a gold car firing at another vehicle in the area of 68th Avenue between 124 and 121 Streets. The targeted vehicle lost control and slammed into a pole. The driver appeared uninjured, and fled, as did the driver of the gold car.
The next day, police were called to investigate another shooting near 128th street between 104 and 105 Avenues. A man was found suffering from gunshot wounds, while two other people surfaced in hospital with injuries. All three were known to police.
About half of the gun violence was related to a battle being waged by two groups for drug territory, said police.
Last week, the federal government pledged 100 new Mounties to Surrey, increasing the size of its force to about 800 officers. It is not yet known when the new officers will be in place.
