SURREY — Police are investigating the discovery of a body in Surrey, but have not yet confirmed that it is the city’s 24th homicide of 2013.

At around 11 a.m. Tuesday, members of the Surrey RCMP were called to an area of Park Drive near the intersection of 102nd Avenue and 124th Street, where a body had been found down an embankment near train tracks.

Some residents reported hearing a gunshot around 11 p.m. Monday.

The circumstances of the discovery led the Surrey RCMP to call in the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.

IHIT spokesman Sgt. Bari Emam said Tuesday afternoon that the investigation was in its preliminary stages and details such as the person’s age or gender were not known.

“We are in the first few hours of the investigation and very little is known to us at this time,” Emam said.

The area of Whalley where the body was found is primarily made up of single-family homes and overlooks the Fraser River and New Westminster beyond.

Mike, who did not wish to give his last name, has lived in the neighbourhood since 1958 and his current home near where the body was found for 22 years.

He described the area as “a decent, working-class neighbourhood.”

He was home Monday night but did not hear or see anything.
