A record number of passengers passed through Prince George airport last year.

The count reached 426,709, the Prince George Airport Authority said Friday, 8,120 more than the previous record, set in 2012.

鈥淲e can see that our growth is indicative with the continual growth in our economy," Prince George Airport Authority chief executive officer John Gibson said. "We can also attribute the increase in traffic to added seats in the marketplace by all three carriers.鈥

Use was particularly heavy in April, July, September and December.

"Each of those months saw increases between four per cent and eight per cent over the same period last year," PGAA marketing and communications manager Lindsay Cotter said.

The total also represents the fourth year of continued growth after the airport suffered a 10-per-cent decline from 2008 to 2009 when the recession struck. In 2009, the count bottomed out at 376,030.

Since the airport was transferred from the federal government in 2003, passenger numbers have increased by 25.7 per cent.
