One driver is in hospital and a family evacuated after two semi-trucks on Highway 3 crashed Wednesday and sparked a fire that threatened a nearby home.
According to RCMP Const. Kris Clark, two semi-trucks 鈥 at least one of which was a lumber truck 鈥 were travelling westbound on Highway 3 near Spotted Lake when one truck attempted to pass the other, just before 5 p.m. Wednesday.
The passing truck appeared to have side-swiped the other truck, and sent both trucks colliding.
鈥淏oth were engulfed in flames upon impact,鈥 said Clark.
One driver was able to escape the wreckage himself, while the other driver was injured and had to be pulled from the cab of his truck by rescue personnel.
The injured driver suffered non-life threatening injuries, and was airlifted to hospital.
The fire sparked by the collision quickly spread to the surrounding area, threatening a nearby family home.
Clark said all individuals in the home were accounted for and safely evacuated for the time being. It鈥檚 unknown how much damage was caused to the home.
Highway 3 was then closed in both directions Wednesday evening, as crews continued to fight the fire.
Around 9 p.m., Highway 3 was reopened but only to a single lane of alternating traffic.
No information was released on when the highway would be fully reopened in both directions.
