Insurance Corporation of B.C. board chairman Paul Taylor has abruptly resigned, shortly after his term at the head of the Crown corporation was renewed.

Taylor stepped down effective immediately, ICBC announced Tuesday. Board member Jatinder Rai has been appointed interim chair, the corporation said.

No reason was given for Taylor's departure, though ICBC's statement praised his leadership in helping to guide the corporation through difficult downsizing and restructuring in late 2012.

Taylor was former chief of staff to then-premier Gordon Campbell in 2010, after previously serving as deputy minister of finance.

Premier Christy Clark's cabinet chose to re-appoint him to a new four-year term as ICBC chair in November, which would have extended his tenure until 2017.
