As an early summer heat wave continues to blast the Lower Mainland, Metro 91原创 is warning people to avoid strenuous outdoor activities in the mid-afternoon due to poor air quality.

The air quality advisory was issued for eastern parts of Metro and the Fraser Valley, due to high concentrations of ground-level ozone, that is expected to persist until the weather changes.

鈥淓xposure is particularly a concern for infants, the elderly and those who have underlying medical conditions such as lung or heart disease and asthma,鈥 the advisory states. 鈥淚f you are experiencing symptoms such as chest discomfort, shortness of breath, cough or wheeze, follow the advice of your health care provider and stay indoors in air-conditioned spaces.鈥

Environment Canada is calling for sun all week, with some cloud and slightly cooler temperatures starting Thursday.

The worst air quality is found between mid-afternoon and early evening, Metro said in a news release.

To reduce personal health risks, people should stay cool and drink plenty of water. People with chronic health conditions should stay inside, particularly in the afternoon and evening and avoid indoor pollution sources such as smoking and vacuuming, Metro said.

Other steps people can take to reduce emissions and improve air quality include minimizing the use of vehicles, taking transit or car pooling, minimizing the use of lawn mowers, avoid refuelling during the hottest time of the day and avoid idling of vehicles.
