Fort Nelson may be small, but it鈥檚 got a big snowman.

A resident there, Lukas Mertelik, single handedly built a 20-foot tall snowman there this winter.

Asked why he did it, Mertelik responded that it was his kids, and 鈥渢he inner kid in me 鈥 I always liked building a snowman.鈥

The work was done over three weekends. He would build a section over a weekend, then let the colder weather harden the snow.

One section was also held in place by metal bars and plywood.

When he began to run out of enough snow on the ground, he took some white stuff off the top of his house.

Once that was done, he rounded off the snow, and then put a home-made top hat onto his creation.

With the exception of the lights and the snowman鈥檚 鈥渟carf鈥 鈥 which is made of tinsel chain 鈥 the entire thing was handmade. All Mertelik said he needed was a ladder, shovel, and a Rubbermaid container to carry the snow.

The snowman has become more popular than Mertelik expected.

鈥淧eople love it,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hey stop and they take pictures and say 鈥榞ood job, awesome.鈥 鈥

Mertelik鈥檚 children are the biggest fans.

鈥淭hey love it,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hey crawl around the base of it, because they just slide off.鈥

The Northern Rockies Regional Municipality resident said he plans to keep it around for the rest of the winter.
