Freezing rain and black ice have made for treacherous road conditions this morning in Metro 91原创, causing several crashes including one in Burnaby where an SUV smashed into a business.
Environment Canada has issued a 鈥渇reezing drizzle鈥 warning for Metro 91原创. The federal weather agency says a freezing drizzle is a rain that freezes on impact to form a coating of clear ice or glaze on the ground and on objects.
The agency says while the northern parts of B.C. will see heavy snow later today, the coastal region will continue to see more freezing rain. Significant ice accumulations and slippery, hazardous roads are likely to continue into Wednesday, the agency says.
More snow is expected in some areas of the region, including Burnaby, Langley and Abbotsford with temperatures expected to hover around the freezing mark all day. As for school closures, the only one that has shut its doors so far is Kings School in Langley.
Transit riders began tweeting early about how packed the SkyTrain is with commuters, as many drivers no doubt opted to leave their car at home.
As of 7 a.m., TransLink reports that buses are on time, however SkyTrain is experiencing minor delays and trains may be held outside stations slightly longer.
There have been several fender benders and crashes this morning across the region, including one involving an SUV in Burnaby. The vehicle slid on the ice during morning rush hour and crashed into the Happy Cuts hair salon on Hastings Street.
Police from jurisdictions all over Metro 91原创 are tweeting about various accidents and asking drivers to slow down because the roads are sheets of ice. Delta police say there is a vehicle in the ditch in the 9000-block of Ladner Trunk Road. Traffic has been reduced to single lane alternating traffic.
Elsewhere in B.C., a section of the Trans-Canada Highway is shut down east of Sicamous after a multi-vehicle accident. RCMP say the driver of a Bronco lost control and rolled in the middle of the highway. Three tractor trailers crashed into the Bronco as a result, one of which burst into flames. All of the drivers escaped from the vehicles unharmed. Highway 1 remains shut down in both directions and drivers are asked to check the Drive BC website for updates.
