Crews are trying to retrieve the body of a man who fell to his death on a mountain near Squamish.

The man was hiking on Sky Pilot Mountain, located southeast of Squamish behind the Stawamus Chief, when he fell into a ravine at around 2:30 p.m. Saturday, said RCMP Insp. Konrad Golbeck.

Squamish RCMP, Squamish Search and Rescue and the B.C. Coroners Service were called to the site, but were unable to recover the man鈥檚 body because of heavy cloud cover and inclement weather.

Members of the RCMP鈥檚 aerial extraction team were able to get to the ravine, and spent the night guarding the body.

Trevor Dunn, general manager of the Sea to Sky Gondola, said the site where the man fell is located out of bounds, about six kilometres from the top of the gondola. It is believed the man came up the gondola and hiked into the backcountry terrain.

鈥淲here he was found is extremely technical,鈥 said Dunn. 鈥淚t鈥檚 very high-risk and dangerous, especially with the changing weather conditions. It was overcast, cloudy and rainy with low visibility in the mountains.鈥

Dunn said mountain climbers have been climbing Sky Pilot Mountain for more than a century.

Police described the man as a hiker, but Dunn said that in that area, a hike would involve climbing and climbing equipment.

Efforts to recover the man鈥檚 body continued Sunday. The man鈥檚 identity and age have not been released.
