Carol Newington

Are you associated with or running as part of a slate? If so, which one?

No

Do you live in the municipality where you are running, and if so, for how long? If not, what is your connection to that community?

I was born in Duncan moved to work in Ontario to pursue my career in 1972 and returned 2005. I live in our family home in the City of Duncan

What is your occupation, and for how long?

Life long Equestrian Coach as well as working in the construction industry.

Tell us about your previous elected and/or community experience.

I have proudly been a councilor with the City of Duncan since 2018. I am President of the Cowichan Music Festival. I work at the Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store as a volunteer, as well as, volunteer with the Meals on the Ground Program.

Why are you running? What’s your motivation?

I am running again to continue the work that was started on housing and safety for all residents. Affordable housing is a must for everyone. Families and seniors are struggling to find housing and we need to work with the Provincial and Federal jurisdictions to help make affordable housing available.

What are your top three issues?

• Affordable housing - Families and seniors are struggling to find housing and we need to work with the Provincial and Federal jurisdictions to help make affordable housing available.

• Safety - The unfortunate “catch and release” policy the RCMP in our area are having to deal with is heartbreaking. We need to encourage a hard look at our justice system and find solution that will work to get lethal drugs and dealing offenders off the streets.

• Encouraging a carbon neutral City is a difficult undertaking but we have to start somewhere. Protecting trees, keeping our Cowichan River clean, protecting pollinators, planting native and perennials all help with this first step.

What’s your vision for your community in 25 years?

A community where transportation is clean and efficient, housing is available for everyone, larger community engagement/participation and lots of listening on the part of our politicians.

What’s one “big idea” you have for your community?

I would like to see that all new apartment buildings in our little City must have a percentage of affordable units offered and kept for perpetuity
